Patterns of Creative AggressionThe Australian magazine that chronicles the creative process, Patterns of Creative Aggression is one of the smallest and one of the most ambitious titles on Stack. Covering music, photography, sculpture, typography and practically every other creative outlet imaginable, PCA looks beyond the finished product to appreciate the efforts taken to get there.

What is Patterns of Creative Aggression?
PCA is a magazine about process. We try to show how people work and how the works people see in galleries, on the shelves and in other magazines come together and the steps and methods involved in production.

What makes it different to the rest?
The magazine tries to show a ‘behind the scenes’ look so to speak. We aim to show people and the work they produce in a more holistic fashion.

Who makes Patterns of Creative Aggression?
Vivek Subramanian and Meg Phillips. We produce this magazine after hours, on weekends, in between paying rent and drinking beer.

Who reads it?
Mostly it’s people who are interested and work in creative fields, but who generally want to know more about how established people work in these fields. We cover a variety of topics and people from all different types of backgrounds, and hence our readership is equally as diverse.

Why do you work in magazines?
I don’t really know why, aside from the fact I thought we could contribute something meaningful (sorry if that sounds cliché). Generally, publishing goes unnoticed and is a costly exercise (both in time and money). So I think it’s more about the interest we have in putting something together that’s physical…if that makes sense…

Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?
Paying rent! (read working 9 to 5).

What would you change about Patterns of Creative Aggression if you could?
We’re constantly changing, adapting with each issue.

Can you pick a favourite issue of Patterns of Creative Aggression?
It’s always the next issue that we’re putting together.

Where do you see Patterns of Creative Aggression in five years?
We work one issue at a time. That’s as far as we plan.
