August tends to be a quiet month for independent publishers, so just like last year we’ll be closing Sampler down from the end of July to the start of September.

That means we have just two weeks left before the break, and we’re turning them both over to fantastic literary magazines that will be ideal for taking off on your holidays this summer. (Or reading in the park / pub / wherever else you can get a bit of peace and quiet.)

First up is Zoetrope, the magazine published in San Francisco by Francis Ford Coppola, and which won the National Magazine Award for fiction earlier this year.

Each issue is designed by a different guest art director, and this time it’s the turn of artist and filmmaker Mickalene Thomas, who opted for an unusual square page shape to best display her collage artwork. But of course this magazine is really all about the words, and there’s some beautifully distinctive work on offer – click the links below for samples of the pieces in this issue.

In this issue:
– Forty Words by Yannick Murphy
– Berlin by Helen Simpson
It Can’t Happen Here by David Byrne
Your Arkansas Traveler by Budd Schulberg
