  • Published in London, 2015

Edited by design journalist Katie Treggiden and designed by magCulture’s Jeremy Leslie, Fiera was a biannual journal that scoured the world’s design fairs looking for the best new creative talent. It stopped publishing in 2017 but we delivered this second issue to Stack subscribers in July 2015, and we noted then the clever and intuitive structure of the content.

The issue kicks off with a Kaleidoscope section, arranging objects of design by colour to give a quick, flickable summary of the things that caught Katie’s eye as she travelled around the fairs. From this initial glance, the magazine digs deeper, zooming into individual objects in greater detail and allowing Fiera to explore ‘design’ in its fullest sense. Because this isn’t just a magazine about things that look nice – it’s about the ingenuity, entrepreneurialism and perseverance required to create a truly exceptional piece of design.

It has a clear social agenda too – time and again, the magazine returns to the idea of design as a force for good, whether it’s highlighting the environmental benefits of repurposing waste or helping craftspeople to enhance the value of their work. So while Fiera is embedded deep in the design industry, its stories are relevant to a far wider readership.

In this issue:

  • Top talent from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Frankfurt and Milan’s design fairs
  • Holy Crap’s clever solution to the waste disposal problem in Nepal
  • The project helping Zimbabwe’s basket weavers make a living from their craft
  • And understanding the soft power of the design fair
