The offices are emptying, the Christmas shopping is intensifying, and our mission to find the top covers of the year rumbles steadily on. Yesterday saw another close vote, with all three magazines taking it down to the wire, but come midnight it was Gratuitous Type that took the title for September. Lots of people tweeted about its lovely acetate cover and its inventive, playful design, but my favourite tweet of the day came from André Cândido, who put his finger on exactly why Cereal covers are always so popular. Good work André – I’ll be in touch today to set up your subscription.

And so we move on to October. Take a look at the covers below and tweet your favourite with the hashtag #cover2014 and you could win a year’s subscription to Stack in 2015. The voting will be open until midnight tonight, and I’ll announce the winner on Monday morning. Think of it as a special treat for those of us who still have a few days left at work this year…

Rebooting a 112-year-old magazine of typography, the first new issue of The Recorder mixes history with cutting-edge contemporary work to analyse the all-pervasive role of type in our lives.
