For workers in the creative industries today, exceptional skill and talent do not always result in adequate financial rewards. That’s why many peers band together, creating platforms for celebrating these unsung heroes. Splash & Grab is one such publication — a brainchild of five students, the open-submission photography magazine showcases emerging, global talent.

For issue #3, Max, Sydney, Dan, Jennifer and Finbar selected photographs and interviews that explore what ‘identity’ means in a fracturing world. Looking at migrants and those affected by Brexit, the team listened to Vybz Kartel, ate courgetti, and argued about the cover during the making of this issue. Find out more below…

In the making of this issue I…

Listened to:
Everything. One moment we’re pumping trap music out of Atlanta then we’ll be listening to Christine and the Queens, and suddenly it’s Vybz Kartel.

Watched:
Our picture editor Dan (below) cook us up endless bowls of pasta (courgetti for Syd) in record time.

Got side tracked by:
The collapse of our country leaving the EU.

Argued about:
The cover for this issue… debating it but eventually agreeing on our final choice. It may be unconventional but we all like it.

Sacrificed:
Money out of our own pockets to print the magazine. Including swanky new fonts that Fin, our graphic designer, was adamant we needed.

Learned:
That seeing things on a huge plasma TV screen makes designing layouts a lot easier. It’s much better than all five of us crowded round a laptop. Also that we work well together as a team.

Lost sleep over:
Whether or not Fin was going to be able to typeset everything in time for our print deadline.

Was impressed by:
The number of brilliant submissions we’ve received and the amazing photographers we’ve been fortunate to come across.

Couldn’t stop laughing at:
Our team’s mispronunciations of some names.

And everyone should buy a copy because:
We’ve spent a lot of time on it and it’s fucking great.
