Art & design Update

We’ve already looked at our favourite judges’ comments from last year’s Stack Awards, and now we’re revisiting the magazines that came out on top. We wanted to see what they’ve been up to since winning their various trophies, and it’s heartening to hear that the experience of the awards fuels and motivates their publishing ventures.

Of course, if you’re a magazine maker yourself, we’d love to present your printed project in front of our expert judges. We have 10 different categories for the Stack Awards, all entirely dedicated to independent magazines, and you have until 28 September to submit your magazine. Read on for updates from Anxy, Eye magazine, and more.

MacGuffin | Editor of the Year and Art Director of the Year

Where are your Stack Awards now?
On our Trophy Shelf, next to the Things To Sort Out Shelf.

What have you been doing since winning both Editor of the Year and Art Director of the Year?
We’ve lectured in New York, Brooklyn, Lausanne, Hamburg, London, Amsterdam, Milan, Eindhoven, Oslo, and München, made exhibitions in Rotterdam, Brussels and Istanbul, won an ADC Award, European Design Award and Dutch Design Award, and produced two issues: The Cabinet and The Ball 😀

If not you, which magazine should win this category in 2018?
There are lots of wonderful magazines, but we are big fans of Real Review and Migrant Journal: they are both breeding grounds for alternative thinking, and combine immaculate research with great design. Migrant is a six-issue publication, so hurry up with the prize 😉

Weapons of Reason | Best Use of Illustration

Where is your Stack Award now?
Currently it has pride of place on a coffee table in our little ‘reading corner’.

What have you been doing since winning Best Use of Illustration last year?
Making issue five of Weapons of Reason, this time focusing on food!

And if not you, who should win this year’s Illustration category?
We like Nous magazine and their use of illustration to explore mental health and promote open-mindedness.

Anxy | Launch of the Year and Stack Subscribers’ Choice

Where are your Stack Awards now?
Our awards hang out with us here in the Anxy studio, as a little daily reminder of the momentum behind our magazine.

What have you been doing since winning last year?
This Spring we launched Anxy number three: The Boundaries Issue, which explores the relationship between personal space and our inner worlds through a mix of essays, interviews, and artwork.

We also hosted our first-ever launch party in San Francisco, where we celebrated the release of issue three with over 200 Anxy fans. Most recently, we started putting together stories for our fourth issue, exploring masculinity and mental health (for which we received over 250 pitches!). And last but not least, we’ve been included in the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts list of 100 people and organisations creating cultural change around the world in 2018, and look forward to attending the award ceremony in November.

If not you, which magazine should win the category of Launch of the Year in 2018?
We love what Matter magazine is doing to bring awareness to the rich interior worlds of people living with brain injuries and mental disabilities.

Buffalo Zine | Magazine of the Year

Where is your Stack Award now?
It’s proudly sitting on a shelf in our office, right next to some other Buffalo paraphernalia, old merchandise and our office breakfast cereal and granola bar.

What have you been doing since winning Magazine of the Year last year?
Just life as usual, working on Buffalo Zine (our Holidays in Spain issue that launched last Spring, and our new Autumn Winter issue that launches in early October). And some commercial projects at Buffalo Studio. Also some picturesque holidays in Italy (Adrian), Argentina (Tati) and Mexico (David).

If not you, which magazine should win this category in 2018?
We love The Happy Reader and The White Review.

Crumble | Student Magazine of the Year

Where is your Stack Award now?
Crumble’s award proudly takes its place in our small office in Edinburgh University’s architecture department. It sits atop a couple of misprints of our latest issue, one that we’re very excited to share soon!

What have you been doing since winning Student Magazine of the Year?
We’ve been getting up to all sorts of fun and exciting things since last November! Most significantly, we’ve published our second and third issues of the magazine. Issue two, themed ‘What’s the Plan?’, was a major success; stocked and sold out in shops around the country. Our latest issue, themed ‘Conflict / Resolution’, has been exclusively stocked at the Tate Modern shop over the summer. We are due to fully launch issue three in Edinburgh next week!

If not you, which magazine should win this category in 2018?
A particular favourite of ours is one of our fellow Scottish self-published magazines Psyche. Based in Glasgow and delicately riso-printed, it makes a really lovely read. That being said, our team have been working very hard over the last year to really make Crumble as best as it can be. We’ve been excited to push boundaries; the articles, poems and illustrations in our latest issues have proved far more daring than our debut. As even just the cover of our latest issue suggests, Crumble is bolder and brighter than ever before, so we hope we might be in for a chance in landing the student magazine of 2018!

Eye Magazine | Cover of the Year

Where is your Stack Award now?
Here is our Stack Award on our ‘Proud Shelf’.

What have you been doing since winning Cover of the Year?
We have made a film about the making of Eye 94’s cover. It will be showing at AGI Mexico, AtypI Antwerp, The Print Show, The Modern Magazine, Letter Exchange Cambridge and more to come later in the year.

If not you, which magazine should win this category in 2018?
So many great covers — how can we choose?
