Mas Context is a quarterly magazine created out of Chicago that focuses on the urban experience. That often means architecture and design (Mas Studio, its publisher, is an architecture and design urban firm) but recent issues have focused on everything from ‘Debate’ to ‘Ordinary’. In fact the thing that really unites these diverse subjects is in the name – this is a magazine that wants to provide more context, from more sources, representing more points of view.

This latest double issue focuses on Bilbao (Mas Context founder Iker Gil’s childhood home) with two volumes dedicated to understanding the city before and after the arrival of the Guggenheim Museum. An utterly fascinating deep dive into the social and industrial history of the city, followed by a nuanced examination of the interconnected relationship between the city and the arts behemoth, it’s brilliantly authoritative and totally absorbing.
