Meat

I’ve been meaning to post about Meat Magazine for ages now, so apologies to editors Nick and James for the delay.

They started Meat while they were at university and have published it more or less sporadically for the last few years. It’s always had a rough edge to it, both in terms of the content and the black and white printing, and the roughness is still there in issue eight (especially in the picture of three-way dog sex). But this issue feels like it’s reaching for something a bit higher.

The illustration has always been fantastic, and other high points are a history of absconding zoo animals, an interview with a champion dog groomer and mirror images of birds that look like other animals (see above – stare at the picture for long enough and going clockwise from top left you should make out the faces of a monkey, a cow, a human and a sheep).

I think it’s been about a year since the last issue and when I spoke to James earlier this year he wasn’t sure whether they were going to make another. I’m very glad they did, and fingers crossed for another issue some time next year.
