Sad in Vancouver

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s post about South African magazine One Small Seed in the run up to the World Cup, comes news of a magazine riding the wake of the Winter Olympics. Sad Mag is an independent magazine made and distributed in Vancouver to showcase local writers, visual artists and people doing interesting stuff.

Its first issue launched in the same week that the British Columbia authorities announced a 90% cut to their art and culture budget, in part to help cover the expense of the Olympics. But Sad Mag’s third issue is out now and they’re blazing a trail that shows why independent magazines don’t need funding from on high – “We were broke before the arts cuts, and we’re still broke now!”

The magazine is available to download as a PDF so take a look, and if you happen to be in the Vancouver area see if you can track a copy down.
