Smells like mono

Lots of independent magazine lovers talk about the way their favourite magazines smell. But Berlin-based magazine mono.kultur is taking the olfactory experience a step further with its new issue, which has swapped visual imagery for a series of 12 scents.

The issue is built around Norwegian artist and scientist Sissel Tolaas, who has dedicated her life and work to the world of smells. Tolaas has used a technique called microencapsulation to impregnate the pages with a range of odours, but readers shouldn’t expect the sort of perfume-y scents often found wafting from magazine pages, as Tolaas has chosen instead to work with ‘difficult smells’.

Not necessarily a pleasant experience then, but it should be well worth sniffing out.
