They’ve been several months in the making, but I can finally announce the four new titles that will be available on Stack this summer. There’s Good from the US, IdN from Hong Kong, Kasino A4 from Finland and Foam from the Netherlands.

They’re all very different magazines, but every one of them lives up to the Stack values of independence, beauty and individuality, and I’m really excited to be introducing such a broad range of titles from all over the world. I first encountered all four of them at Colophon back in March, and started speaking to their editors and publishers that weekend.

There has been a huge amount of enthusiasm for Stack and the whole process wouldn’t have been possible without the goodwill of publishers and distributors, so thanks very much to everyone involved in that. Over the next few months Stack subscribers will get the chance to experience the magazines first hand, and I’m sure people will enjoy getting to know them as much as I have.

You can read interviews with the people behind the magazines by going to the relevant magazine pages (links above, thanks very much to Andrew and Jeremy on We Make Magazines), or read on for the press release that is being sent out this morning, complete with my short summary of each of the magazines.

Happy reading!

More of the world’s best independent magazines

Stack, the independent magazine subscription service, will today make four new additions to its line up of international titles. Drawn from Hong Kong, the USA, Finland and the Netherlands, the magazines will join Stack’s existing roster to give subscribers even more choice and variety.

Stack launched in December last year with the aim of making it easier than ever for people to find and enjoy independent magazines. Subscribers sign up to Stack for a single annual fee of just £36, and every month they receive a different independent magazine sent direct to their door. Every delivery is a surprise, so while subscribers never know exactly what they’ll get next, they do know that it will be a beautiful, intelligent magazine that would be hard to find in the shops. And at just £3 per delivery including postage and packaging, it will always be cheaper than buying the same magazine off the shelf.

Steven Watson, founder of Stack, runs through the new titles:

Good // USA // www.good.is

“It’s principled without being preachy, cool but caring; Good has carved out a niche by devoting itself to the forward-thinking people and organisations that want to live a better, more responsible life. Award-winning design and smart, entertaining editorial combine in this totally unique magazine that is hugely popular in the US, but is currently only available in the UK via direct subscription or on Stack.”

IdN // Hong Kong // www.idnworld.com

“International Designers Network prides itself in doing all the things that are normally too expensive and too difficult to do with ink on paper. It’s grown into one of the world’s most ambitious design magazines, but this is no closed shop – IdN is totally accessible, and with a bundled DVD and a cover price of $15 where available, Stack’s £3 subscription is even better value than normal.”

Kasino A4 // Finland // www.wearekasino.com

“Melancholic, anarchic and pretty fantastic, Kasino A4 is made by a group of award-winning artists, writers and photographers who dominate the Finnish alternative cultural scene. A style magazine like no other, its challenging photography and often provocative subject matter are balanced by quality writing and the genuine excitement of ambitious, experimental creativity.”

Foam // Netherlands // www.foammagazine.nl

“Each issue of Foam is created around a single theme, from ‘displacement’ or ‘sport’ to more esoteric subjects like ‘searching’ or ‘Eden’. Driven forward by its central theme, Foam is inspired to look beyond the galleries and big name shows, and the result is a photography magazine that doesn’t just appeal to photographers. Weighing in at around 180 pages, every issue is guaranteed to cature the imagination.”
