Podcast: Independents of New York

Regular listeners to the Stack podcast will know that for weeks now I’ve been threatening to release some of the audio from the live events we’ve held this year. And now, in the lull between Christmas and the new year I’ve finally managed to make it happen.

The podcast below was recorded at the School of Visual Arts in New York on Tuesday 18 October, and features Ben Yarling from American Chordata, Christopher Isenberg from Victory Journal and Sarah Forbes Keough from Put A Egg On It speaking about their experiences making magazines in the city. We’ve sent them all out as Stack deliveries in the past, and of course American Chordata was this month’s magazine, so I hope you enjoy this opportunity to hear from the people behind the titles.

I was particularly interested to hear their perspective on the state of independent publishing around the world, with Chris noting that the scene here in London seems somehow more romantic, exciting and friendly than they have over there in New York. I’m not sure I agree with that (I can say for sure that I only encountered friendly people while I was there meeting magazine makers) but it’s illuminating to see your own city through somebody else’s eyes, and it’s great to know that people are paying attention to what’s happening over here.

We’ll release another of these event-based podcasts early in the new year, so watch out for that, and of course if you’re looking for some entertainment over the next few days, check out our archive of episodes on Soundcloud or iTunes. And if all this talk of magazines makes you want to join the fun, sign up for Stack and we’ll deliver a different title to your door every month in 2017. At the time of publishing this post there’s still time to get in on the January delivery to make sure you get the full set…
