Dispatches is a big magazine — the first large-format title we’ve delivered since Good Trouble went out in August 2018 — and with this one size really does matter. It offers readers a different type of space; this probably isn’t the sort of magazine you’re going to whip out on the bus, so it encourages you to slow down and engage with its characterful, intellectual musings.
The magazine is based in Berkeley, the first campus of the University of California, and the city’s academic influences run through the publication. This issue is themed ‘Fate of the City’, and its writers engage in an enlightening and wide-ranging discussion of what cities will be like in the future.

What is Dispatches?
Dispatches is a magazine made in Berkeley, California, bringing you strong, original voices that tell stories through art, articles, fiction, poetry, and photography.
What makes it different from the rest?
I think Dispatches’s commitment to voice and personal experience — harnessed around a theme to help stimulate thought — allows us to present you with a mosaic of unique perspectives.
Who makes Dispatches?
A small team of Californians with a wide range of interests and a passion for words and ideas well said.
Who reads it?
Hopefully, more and more people every day who are looking for incisive thought. People looking for a plurality of ideas and interests, well-articulated and emotionally resonant.
Why do you work in magazines?
I guess I kind of fell into it. But I love the grouping of minds and talents together to bring something off the ground that we’re all proud of. Plus, as far as editing is concerned, I really enjoy the process of helping a writer articulate their vision.
Aside from the print magazine, what else are you involved in?
I do some freelance writing, some of my own writing, some research for a cultural historian, and I have a full-on, head-over-heels love for film. Watching movies, reading about movies, writing about movies.
What would you change about Dispatches if you could?
I don’t know yet, it’s pretty dreamy to me.
Where do you see Dispatches in five years?
Good question. In the hands (physically or digitally) of a lot of people. With a little help from a lot of friends, that should be possible.
