We delivered The Future of Ghosts to Stack subscribers in July 2022, and on Tuesday 23rd August editors Petre Mogos and Laura Naum spoke to a group of us about the ideas behind their spooky magazine. As I say at the start of the video below, I feel like The Future of Ghosts is the sort of magazine that really benefits from a discussion like this – there are so many ideas floating around beneath the surface that I found myself getting drawn deeper and deeper in as Petre and Laura revealed their secrets.

Of course you can absolutely enjoy the magazine on its own, but for example I was fascinated to hear how they invoked a sense of ghostliness by referencing images that didn’t make it into the magazine: There are strange, amorphous blue shapes dotted throughout the issue (see the bottom right-hand corner of the spread at the top of this post). In the conversation they reveal that these shapes are the distorted outlines of images they decided not to use while designing the issue – I love that nod to the process of making a magazine, and the odd, dislocating effect created by the shapes.

If you’ve already enjoyed this issue I hope you’ll also enjoy watching our video. And if you haven’t seen it in the flesh yet but you’re left intriguied, head over to the Stack shop to buy your copy. We hold our Stack Magazine Club every month, free for Stack subscribers, so if you want to join us, sign up to receive our surprise magazine delivery, and I hope I’ll see you on Zoom one day soon.
