Isolarii seeks to revive a Renaissance genre of the same name. Each issue is conceived as an ‘island’; a world unto itself. This issue, entitled Purple Perilla, is devoted to the experimental Chinese writer Can Xue, who took up writing at 30 and soon established herself at the forefront of world literature, lauded by Susan Sontag as the Chinese author most deserving of the Nobel Prize.
