Delivered to Stack subscribers in October 2022, Al Hayya is a magazine born out of Beirut and dedicated to exploring, “the works, interests and strife of women, bilingually in Arabic and English.” It’s a hugely impressive publication, and I was very pleased to welcome three of its creators to our latest Magazine Club.

We were joined by editor-in-chief Maya Moumne, editorial director and co-creative director Yasmine Rifaii, and photography editor and co-creative director Myriam Boulos, and they began by explaining that Al Hayya is intended for a broad audience – they want it to be read by a wide range of women and men, and for it to become the sort of magazine that they stumble across when they step into their favourite hairdresser. Often on Stack we see magazines that are intended for quite a narrow or niche readership, but it’s clear that Al Hayya is agitating for a greater change than it could manage with a smaller following.

There was a huge amount to cover in our conversation, and I hope the video below will help take you a little closer to what they’re doing with this strong and challenging new title. Our Magazine Club is invitation-only and intended for Stack subscribers to meet the people behind the magazines we send out – sign up for our subscription and every month we’ll send you a surprise magazine, then invite you to a Zoom call where you can hear the stories behind the stories.
